The motorcycle theory test, explained.
Before you sit on a bike, the theory test is the very first box to tick. Here's what it covers, how to book it, and where it sits on the road to your full licence. No jargon, just the bits you actually need.
What the theory test actually is.
The motorcycle theory test is a computer-based exam run by the official Driver Theory Test service. It checks that you understand the rules of the road, what the signs mean, and how to handle a bike safely before you ever ride one.
You take it at a test centre, answer the questions on screen, and get your result the same day. Pass it and you can apply for a learner permit, which is the document that lets you book your IBT and start riding under instruction.
Multiple choice
The motorcycle category test has 40 questions. You need 35 right to pass. Worth confirming on theorytest.ie before you book, as the format can change.
Done at a test centre
Centres run across the country, with several within easy reach of Meath and Westmeath. You book a slot that suits you.
Result the same day
You find out straight away. Pass, and you're clear to apply for your learner permit.
Where the theory test fits on the road to riding.
A lot of people get the steps in the wrong order and waste time. This is the sequence that works.
Pass the theory test
Book it at theorytest.ie, study the motorcycle questions, and sit the exam. This is the step you can start today, before anything else.
Book it nowApply for your learner permit
With the theory test passed, you apply to the NDLS for a category A1, A2 or A learner permit, depending on the bike you want to ride.
Get your learner permitDo your IBT
The mandatory 16 hours over four modules. You need your learner permit in hand to start, and this is where we come in.
Book your IBTPractise, then sit your test
Once your IBT is done you ride solo to build hours, do some pre-test prep, and book your practical test when you're ready.
Book your testHow to get through it first time.
Most people who fail the theory test simply didn't put the study in. The questions come from a set bank, so the more you practise the ones you'll actually be asked, the better you'll do.
Get the official revision material, work through the motorcycle questions until you're scoring well above the pass mark every time, and book the test once you're consistent. If anything in there confuses you, ask us. We talk learners through it all the time.
Use the official material
Study from the recognised question bank, not random sources. It mirrors what comes up on the day.
Practise to a margin
Don't aim to scrape a pass. Score well above it on mock tests and the real one feels easy.
Then come to us
Once it's passed and your permit is sorted, we handle the rest, from IBT through to test day.
Once it's passed, here's what we do.
IBT Training
The mandatory 16-hour course over four modules. The legal step between your permit and riding solo.
