Initial Basic Training

Your IBT is the first legal step on two wheels.

Every new rider in Ireland has to complete IBT before riding on the road. It's 16 hours across four modules, and we're a fully approved centre. We provide the bike and the gear, so you just bring your learner permit.

What IBT is

Built to make you a safe rider, not just a licensed one.

Compulsory Initial Basic Training is the mandatory course for all new motorcycle riders in Ireland. It runs over 16 hours, split into four modules, and takes you from basic machine control all the way to handling real traffic.

It covers the things that actually keep you upright: observation, hazard awareness, road positioning and defensive riding. Finish it and you get your IBT certificate, the document you need before you can ride on the road.

  • You need a learner permit first

Category A, A1 or A2. No permit, no IBT. It's the one thing you have to sort before we can start.

  • Usually run over two days

16 hours is a fair bit, so most riders do it across a couple of days at a pace that suits them.

  • One certificate per category

Your IBT is tied to the licence category you're training for, so it matches the bike you'll ride.

Racks of motorcycle jackets, gloves and helmets available to Meath Motorcycle Academy riders
Turn up with nothing

Bike, helmet, gloves and jacket, all provided.

You don't need to own a motorcycle or buy a stitch of kit to start your IBT. We supply the bike and a full set of protective gear in your size, so a complete beginner can arrive with just a learner permit and get going safely.

When you're ready to buy your own, we'll happily point you towards what's worth the money.

The four modules

16 hours, broken into four clear stages.

Each module builds on the last. You start off the road getting comfortable on the bike, and finish out in real traffic with an instructor alongside you.

01

Introduction to riding

The basics of motorcycle control: starting, stopping and simple manoeuvres, plus your safety gear and why it matters.

02

Practical on-site training

More advanced moves in a controlled area: slalom, figure-eight and emergency braking, with feedback as you go.

03

On-road training

Out on real roads under instructor supervision, handling traffic, junctions, turns and changing conditions.

04

Final assessment

A check of your skills and knowledge. Pass it and you get your IBT certificate, ready to apply for the next stage.
